Zurich-based SIX Swiss Exchange is Switzerland's principal stock exchange, owned and managed by SIX Group, which provides a number of other financial infrastructure services in the country.
The SIX Swiss Exchange was founded in 1993, with the merger of Switzerland’s three stock exchanges: Geneva's (founded in 1850), Zurich's (1873) and Basle's (1876). The merger was completed in 1995 and the same year, SIX became the first stock exchange in the world to incorporate a fully automated trading, clearing and settlement system.
The main stock market index for the SIX is the SMI, or Swiss Market Index, one of the most well-known benchmarks around the world. The index consists of the 20 largest and most liquid companies listed on the Exchange.
Together they cover around 80% of the total Swiss stock market capitalisation. Therefore, the SMI is the most important equity index in Switzerland and it also serves as an indicator of the Swiss economy. On 18th June 2019, the SMI climbed over 10,000 points for the first time since its launch in 1988 .
Last year, the Exchange recorded numerous listings: twelve companies went public, the highest number reached since 2001, raising CHF 89.4 billion. Meanwhile, CHF 2.88 billion of net profit was generated by SIX Group in 2018 and CHF 17.30 per share was being paid out to shareholders by SIX following the record profit.
The same year, SIX set up SIX FinTech Ventures, a CHF 50 million corporate venture fund to promote innovation in the Swiss financial center by investing in start-ups with the potential to become successfully established companies.
With a free-float market capitalization of EUR 1,076 billion, the Swiss stock exchange is the fourth biggest stock exchange in Europe.
SIX is also building the world’s first digital stock exchange –SIX Digital Exchange (SDX), based on Distributed Ledger Technology. From 2019 onwards, SIX reports annually on its Corporate Responsibility engagement according to GRI standards.
SIX Group employs 2,594 people from 50 different nations in 20 countries worldwide.
