Czech investment fund Penta acquires Romania's largest pharma group

The international pharmacy chain Dr.Max, owned by Czech investment fund Penta has concluded a purchase contract with A&D Pharma, Romania's largest pharmaceutical group.  A&D Pharma owns Sensiblu and Punkt pharmacy networks, Mediplus wholesale company in Romania and A&D Pharma Marketing and Sales – one of the biggest marketing and sales pharmaceutical platform operating in CEE. The transaction is still subject to approval by the anti-trust authority in Romania and its value will not be disclosed. 

“With its total number of 631 pharmacies, the leading full-line wholesaler business, the Marketing&Sales service provider and more than 4,500 people employed, Dr.Max will become number one in the Romanian pharmaceutical market”Penta Investments said in a press release on Thursday.

"With the acquisition of A&D Pharma, Dr.Max is further strengthening its presence in Central Europe and is clearly expanding its leading position as an Omnichannel retail healthcare provider in Europe,” Dr.Max CEO Leonardo Ferrandino said.

Ferrandino  became CEO of Dr Max in October 2016. He arrived at the Penta investment group  after 12-years at Admenta Italia, which is part of the Celesio Group. After several roles in the finance department in Italy and Germany, at Admenta he served as Vice President and CFO responsible for, among other matters, the Finance, IT, and M&A divisions. As of 2009 he headed up the Consumer Solutions retail division and afterward the Pharmacy Solutions division as well. In 2012, Leonardo became a member of Celesio‘s Group Executive Committee and in 2014 he was involved in developing the business in Italy and Slovenia, as well as leading the Celesio Group Sales and Marketing activities. He also had direct responsibility for the development of the EPN (European Pharmacy Network).

The acquisition of the A&D Pharma Group is expected to step up the sales of Dr.Max to more than 2.3 billion euro per year ($2.7 billion) and to boost its headcount to 12,000 people. The Romanian market is highly promising for Dr.Max, nevertheless Dr.Max sees further development within Europe.
